The demographics of prisoners in Cypriot prisons have changed in recent years, with the main characteristics now being drug-related offenses, sexual crimes, and immigration issues. Currently, over a third of prisoners are linked to drug offenses, and there is also a significant number convicted of sexual crimes against minors. Consequently, the composition of the prison population has shifted, with an increased number of those awaiting trial for property crimes. The prisons now hold a total of 1134 inmates.
