ECHR Criticism of Rape Case Involving Political Figure
July 3, 2025
The European Court of Human Rights has criticized Cypriot authorities for serious lapses in the criminal procedure related to a political figure accused of rape. The complainant, now 28, alleged she was raped in 2011 and accused the system of failing to provide adequate protection and thorough examination of her case. The Court found that the lack of specialized evaluations and biases in assessing the case violated her rights. Ultimately, a compensation of €35,470 was awarded.
