Increase in Food Prices Driven by Meat and Vegetable Oils
August 9, 2025
Global food prices rose in July to a two-year high, primarily due to increases in meat and vegetable oil prices, as reported by the FAO. The food price index rose by 1.6% compared to the previous month, marking the highest level since February 2023. Increased demand from Asian markets and supply restrictions due to animal disease outbreaks have impacted meat prices. In vegetable oils, the increases are attributed to reduced exports and harvest delays. Conversely, prices for cereals, dairy products, and sugar have decreased.
