Issues with the Lisbon Funicular: Causes and Consequences

A cable connecting two gondolas of a funicular in Lisbon broke, leading to a tragedy with 16 fatalities. A visual inspection conducted hours earlier found no anomalies. However, the section of the cable where the disconnection occurred could not be visually inspected. The incident happened at a speed of 60 km/h and lasted only 50 seconds. Investigators are continuing to analyze the causes of the event.
