The development of the European fire-fighting base in Cyprus

September 13, 2025

The Republic of Cyprus's attempt to establish a fire-fighting aircraft base under the rescEU mechanism faced significant obstacles since 2019. There was disagreement between the European Commission, which proposed Canadair aircraft, and the Department of Forestry, favoring Air Tractor aircraft. Despite political will, the request for a permanent base was rejected, and Cyprus only acquired two Air Tractor aircraft in 2020. The situation appears to be changing with a recent proposal from the President of the European Commission for a base in Cyprus in 2025. The question remains whether the differences have been resolved or if the new proposal signifies a change in direction.
