Senate Limits Military Actions in Venezuela

January 8, 2026

The U.S. Senate voted on a proposal that limits military actions by the Trump administration in Venezuela following a failed attempt to capture President Maduro. The decision passed with 52 votes in favor and 47 against, including support from five Republicans. Although primarily symbolic, this marks the first time during Trump's second term that Congress seeks to restrict the use of military force by the president. Some Republicans expressed concerns that prolonged military presence may require Congressional approval. Trump stated that no attacks are planned, but he does not rule out military involvement if Venezuela does not cooperate regarding its oil reserves.
