George Vasiliou's Presidency and Goals for the Cyprus Issue in 1988
January 18, 2026
George Vasiliou was elected President of the Republic in 1988 with a clear goal to achieve a solution to the Cyprus issue within six months. Despite being an economist without prior political experience, he was well-informed about the situation. He decided to re-establish the National Council and promoted discussions on Cyprus-related matters. Vasiliou held repeated sessions with former political leaders to outline common goals. By the end of 1988, a minimum agreement was reached through the Unanimous Decisions of January 1989.
