Shelters in Cyprus: Current Status and Future Prospects

March 2, 2026

The drone attack on the British Bases’ military airport has brought attention to shelters in Cyprus. There are 2,200 shelters that can accommodate about 30% of the population, but their number is decreasing as owners seek to repurpose them. The Interior Ministry plans to recheck the shelters and consider policy changes. These shelters were primarily created in the 1990s for protection during conflicts. Additionally, it is noted that citizens are not notified immediately in case of a crisis.
