March 29, 2026
The Turkish invasion of 1974 continues to have lasting effects on Cypriot society, with significant losses of property and lives. The population of those trapped in the occupied areas faces ongoing challenges, with numbers dwindling dramatically. The Commissioner of the Presidency, Marios Harziotis, is working on the recognition of the missing and improving the lives of those trapped. So far, 859 out of 1,619 missing persons have been identified, leaving 760 unaccounted for. Efforts to address these issues are ongoing.
