ECHR Ruling in Favor of Cypriots Over Unused Expropriated Land
May 1, 2026
The European Court of Human Rights ruled that the Republic of Cyprus violated the property rights of 10 Cypriot citizens regarding land expropriated in 1976. This land remained unused despite the authorities' commitment for development. The applicants requested the return of the land in 2008, but their request was denied. The court ordered compensation of €12,000 for moral damages and €5,000 for legal costs. This decision highlights the importance of protecting property rights under the European Convention on Human Rights.
