Construction of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina Moves Forward
May 9, 2026
Italy has decided to proceed with the construction of a bridge over the Strait of Messina, which will connect Sicily with mainland Italy. The project, costing 14.4 billion euros, has been approved after many delays and political conflicts. The bridge will be the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world, featuring six traffic lanes and two railway tracks. It is expected to reduce reliance on ferry connections. The Ministry of Infrastructure will implement updates before continuing with the project.
