Reduction of Goat's Milk Ratio for PDO Halloumi

May 13, 2026

The production of PDO halloumi is facing challenges due to foot-and-mouth disease, which has significantly reduced livestock in Cyprus. The government issued a new decree reducing the minimum percentage of goat's milk from 25% to 15%. This decision aims to address the crisis in milk production, which has decreased by about 10%. While goat's milk production has declined, cow's milk production has increased by 4%. The situation remains difficult as production continues to be affected by health conditions.
