Proposed Landfill Tax for Municipal Waste in Cyprus

A new waste management legislation in Cyprus is being discussed by the Environment Committee, introducing a landfill tax. The tax will start at €10 per ton and is expected to rise to €70 by 2039 to reduce the current landfill rate. If the regulations are not approved by August 31, Cyprus will lose €23 million from the European Union. The objective is to decrease the 68% of household waste currently sent to landfills to meet the EU target of 10% by 2035. The landfill tax aims to promote sustainable waste management and support local initiatives.
