Economic Impact of Lionfish on Coastal Fishing
July 8, 2026
The lionfish, an invasive species present in the seas of Cyprus for 20 years, has caused serious economic damage to coastal fishing. Despite public fears regarding attacks on swimmers, the Fisheries Department assures that no such incidents have been reported and that swimmers are safe. However, the fish is highly toxic, and consumption can lead to severe poisoning. The government has initiated a subsidy plan to support fishermen affected by the situation. The trade and consumption of the lionfish are strictly prohibited by law.
