Testimonies of Violence Against Women in Cyprus in 1974

During the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, soldiers committed horrific acts of violence against women of all ages, ranging from 12 to 80 years old. Victims' testimonies describe shocking details of sexual assault and rape, including attacks in their own homes and in public spaces. These assaults were carried out with brutal disregard for the dignity of the women. This situation was officially recorded by police officer and author Panagiotis Machlouzaridis. The victims continue to suffer from their traumatic experiences to this day.
