August 7, 2026

In recent years, the Central Prisons of Cyprus have seen a surge in individuals convicted of drug offenses, exacerbating the issue of overcrowding. Despite strict sentencing, drug dealers continue to import large quantities of drugs. In 2025, over 900 individuals were convicted, with 232 ending up in prison. Those incarcerated for drug offenses represent the majority in prisons, followed by those convicted of sexual crimes. Moreover, the percentage of foreign inmates in Cypriot prisons is notably high.
