Efforts to Save the Cactus Pear in Cyprus

August 8, 2026

A team from Israel is working in Cyprus to save the cactus pear from a harmful insect, the cochineal. The Department of Agriculture is collaborating with these scientists to mitigate the damage caused by the insect on the island's land. The introduction of natural enemies of the cochineal, such as the beetle Hyperaspis trifurcata, appears to be yielding positive results. Authorities express cautious optimism that while complete eradication of the insect is not feasible, the situation could improve. More shipments of beetles are expected in the coming months for further reinforcement of the efforts.
