Challenges in Halloumi PDO Production Due to Milk Shortages

September 12, 2026

The foot-and-mouth disease crisis has highlighted the weaknesses in Cypriot livestock farming. Halloumi PDO faces serious challenges, as it requires at least 50% goat's milk for production. Stavros Malas presented a plan with a total budget of €610 million for the recovery of livestock farming. There is a significant shortage of goat's milk, with an annual deficit reaching 144 million liters. Increasing exports have not managed to boost prices, raising concerns about the future of halloumi.
