Establishment of Marine Protected Areas for the Conservation of the Mediterranean Monk Seal
September 19, 2026
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research is establishing three Marine Protected Areas in Cyprus to protect the Mediterranean monk seal. This species is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. The main threats they face are overfishing and habitat destruction. The areas will include the Sea Caves of Ayia Napa, Saint George Alamanou, and Halavro. The delineation is expected to lead to important management and protection measures.
