Challenges in Electricity Supply and Increased Costs for Consumers

Consumers of electricity will face increasing costs and potential power outages in the coming years due to electricity shortages. The Regulatory Authority for Energy of Cyprus (RAEK) is activating a power mechanism to address this energy deficit, which will impose additional financial burdens on consumers. In Ireland, implementing this mechanism resulted in a cost of €1.5 billion. There are concerns that even with the arrival of natural gas in 2028, 18 months will be required for new units to become operational. If these issues are not resolved, Cyprus may face a significant energy crisis by 2030.
