Increase in Bacterial Infection in Europe and Cyprus

A serious bacterial infection, causing pneumonia and meningitis, is rising in Europe and Cyprus. The number of cases has reached a historic high since 1996, with 11 confirmed cases in Cyprus in 2024. Infants and the elderly are the most vulnerable groups. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the increase in cases began in 2022. The seasonality of the disease has now returned to pre-pandemic levels.
